Portable Architecture

Portable Architecture

Description

The purpose of this third edition of Portable Architecture remains unchanged – to show that mobile buildings are feasible, are able to fulfil many different roles, and are economically viable to build and operate. New projects have only been included if they add some new innovation in the way they have been designed, built or operated. In selecting them I have excluded work which uses strategies that are already examined in equal detail elsewhere. This book would not be possible without the cooperation and generosity of those who have commissioned, designed and built the buildings examined in the case studies. I must therefore express my real gratitude to those who have helped with the creation of this book by giving their time and material – in particular Maurice Agis, Eduard Böhtlingk, Simon Blackmore, Neil Burford, Todd Dalland, Mark Dytham, Mark Fisher, Giuseppe Lignano, Alan Parkinson, Jennifer Siegal, the TAG McLaren Group, and Axel Thallemer. I also thank Alison Yates of the Architectural Press for helping bring this new edition to fruition and the Leverhulme Trust for a study abroad fellowship that enabled important dedicated research to be carried out.

Elements of Visual Design in the Landscape

Elements of Visual Design in the Landscape

Description

What makes a visually appealing landscape? How can the design and use of a landscape be harmonized? These are just some of the questions tackled in this refreshing approach to the subject. In Elements of Visual Design in the Landscape the author explains a range of design principles.

The book is profusely illustrated using both abstract and real examples taken from a wide range of international locations, together with cross references between related principles and case studies, demonstrating how principles can be applied to visually creative design and management.

A unique feature of this book is the author's presentation of a vocabulary of visual design, structured in a logical and easy to follow sequence, which makes the book highly accessible even to non-designers who increasingly need to know about visual design in their work. There is also a glossary for the terms that may be unfamiliar to those coming into design for the first time. Given the broad range of the book it will be an important guide for students on landscape, architecture, planning and design courses, and professionals will also find it an ideal source of ideas and applications.

This new edition includes revised and updated text that will link to other areas of research and disciplines such as aesthetic philosophy and psychology. A third of the photographs have been replaced with new photographs showing better and more recent examples and also reflecting landscape in a wider range of countries.

Disclosing Horizons: Architecture, Perspective and Redemptive Space

Disclosing Horizons: Architecture, Perspective and Redemptive Space

Description
This study examines the influence of perspective on architecture, highlighting how critical changes in the representation and perception of space in history continue to inform the way architects design. Three critical processes in the development of perspective thought are identified - the conversion of reality into knowledge, the structuring of an internally coherent order and the need to construct a substitute reality. This threefold development is examined at two levels. Temple first considers the historical, cultural and philosophical contexts of perspective, and the impact that changing world views through history had on architecture. The second level consists of a series of case studies of particular buildings that highlight an aspect of a contemporary idea of perspective. As a whole, this volume brings to light the hermeneutical nature of architecture, and finds in its history fresh paths of investigation that can inform and shape our interpretations of architectural design today.
