Façades: Principles of Construction

Paperback: 135 pages
Publisher: Birkhäuser Basel; 1 edition (August 24, 2007)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 3764379626
ISBN-13: 978-3764379629

Description
Facades determine the appearance of a building. Thus they have a very important role to play in architecture. At the same time, the building envelope has important functions to fulfill, including lighting, weatherproofing, thermal isolation, load distribution, and sound insulation, to name only the most important. In the last fifteen years, facades have become significantly more complex. For example, "intelligent,â climate-active facades use self-regulating systems to respond to changing light and weather conditions.

This book demonstrates the principles of facade construction. Guidelines are suggested for good detailing. The installation procedures are described for the most common materials âglass, wood, steel, concrete, and aluminum. Numerous drawings made specially for the book explain the principles of the individual types of facade which are then illustrated with built examples.

Advances In Construction Materials

By Christian U. Grosse
Publisher: Springer
Number Of Pages: 784
Publication Date: 2007-09-14
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 3540724478
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9783540724476

Book Description:
The book is a compilation of recent research results on building construction materials. The construction industry consumes extreme volumes of material, and the growing demand for quality and safety require continuous improvement of materials and material compositions. A deep understanding of material behavior is essential to enable efficient construction: light-weight or heavily burdened structures ask for the development of innovative composites or new material compositions. Civil Engineers and Materials Scientists from all over the world present their ideas for further material developments, the testing of structures and solutions for in situ applications. Many of the innovations, composites and the design of existing material mixes, especially for concrete, are discussed. These include high-strength and high-performance concrete (HPC), self-compacting concrete (SCC), shotcrete, and textile or fiber reinforced concrete (FRC). Moreover, the enhancement of material variations and the improvement of their properties are observed for most construction materials (e.g. wood, masonry, steel, polymers). This book gives a good overview about the state-of-the-art in construction material science. Some of the world s leading experts have contributed in honor of Professor Dr.-Ing. Hans W. Reinhardt. The book starts with a review about his scientific achievements up to his recent retirement. Some contributions are presented at the conference "Advances in Construction Materials" (ACM2007) held in July 2007 in Stuttgart.

Intelligent Skins

ff

Looking to the future, “Intelligent Skins” sets out the principles for the design of the intelligent building envelope. It highlights an exciting new approach to the area, where the fabric of the building responds to external changes and internal demands.

The prime objective is to control internal environments through a responsive building fabric rather than by energy consuming building services systems. The authors examine the potential for integral intelligence within the fabric of the building and explore the evolution of information technology and smart materials which have allowed a whole new category of design principles to be created. Some of the highlighted features : • Gain a comprehensive knowledge of the evolution of the “Intelligent Skin” • Explores a new approach to Intelligent Buildings, focusing on the fabric of the building responding to external changes and internal demands • Includes over twenty cutting-edge international case studies

Earthbag Building: The Tools, Tricks and Techniques (Natural Building Series)

ff

Earthbag Building is the first comprehensive guide to all the tools, tricks, and techniques for building with bags filled with earth or earthbags. Having been introduced to sandbag construction by the renowned Nader Khalili in 1993, the authors developed this “Flexible Form Rammed Earth Technique” over the last decade. A reliable method for constructing homes, outbuildings, garden walls and much more, this enduring, tree-free architecture can also be used to create arched and domed structures of great beauty-in any region, and at home, in developing countries, or in emergency relief work. This profusely illustrated guide first discusses the many merits of earthbag construction, and then leads the reader through the key elements of an earthbag building: • Special design considerations • Foundations, walls and floors • Electrical, plumbing and shelving • Lintels, windows and door installations • Roofs, arches and domes • Exterior and interior plasters. With dedicated sections on costs, making your own specialized tools, and building code considerations, as well as a complete resources guide, Earthbag Building is the long-awaited, definitive guide to this uniquely pleasing construction style. Kaki Hunter and Donald Kiffmeyer have been involved in the construction industry for the last 20 years, specializing in affordable, low-tech, low-impact building methods that are as natural as possible. They developed the “Flexible Form Rammed Earth Technique” of building affordably with earthbags and have taught the subject and contributed their expertise to several books and journals on natural building.
